Tasmota Ready Smart Home Devices - No flashing and without the Cloud!

(Don't forget the 30% coupon code towards the end of this post!)

UPDATE 2020/11/01 - Notice posted on their website:

Notice:

The product purchased ealier than 20th Oct are 2m bin which is not compaitble wih official Tasmota OTA server. After 20th Oct 2020, the product changed to standard 1m bin and fully compatible with official Tasmota OTA server

You heard correctly.  No flashing, no jumper wires, no soldering, no Tuya Convert, etc., take the smart bulb, switch, plug, etc., out of the box, plug it in and it is ready to go!  The device will be in access point mode ready to add to your Wi-Fi network.  ESPHome users can easily apply their own configuration to use them as well!

But why do we need this?  Can't we just flash our own devices?  Absolutely! If you have the skills and know how to flash the all of your devices then this might not be for you.

Do you just want something ready to go?  Keep reading, more and more smart home devices such as Smart Bulbs and Smart Plugs are almost impossible to flash via soldering/jig methods due to the pins not being accessible.  Then let's not forget, many smart devices have moved to RTL based chipsets that can't be flashed with Tasmota/ESPHome at all.

A company name ATHOM Technology is bringing several devices to the table to help break down the barriers of having a true smart home that isn't dependent on the cloud and possibly some company selling your data.  It reminds me of the exciting times where we could first start buying computers with Linux installed and didn't have to pay for the Windows license!

I've looked at several of the products in this run and while one glaring issue I have upfront is the lack of open pin headers like you might see on a Shelly1 switch, you do have to keep in mind that things will only get better as hardware runs continue to improve and we voice our opinions with the company.  With that said, I was pleasantly surprised with the RGB+CCT (5 channel color) smart bulb brightness.

I do plan on doing a full review video of several of them but I have been delayed in my schedule with the current Hurricane Laura recovery efforts.  Instead of wasting more time for the ones that want to check this out right now, I'm doing this blog post to share a coupon code for 30% off on their store at https://athom.aliexpress.com/  just put in DIGIBLURDIY as the promo code.  UPDATE:  There are only 100 coupons available, once I get confirmation they are done, I'll edit this post.

Stay tuned to the digiblurDIY YouTube channel.... https://www.youtube.com/digiblurDIY

    1. Yes, the regular switches fit in decora faceplates.

    2. Just got my switches and I can confirm they do not fit anything std decora... What 'regular switches are you referring to? I thought these that you mentioned would fit, but they are in no way adaptable for the decora switches.. I don't see anything else I could buy that would be different? Did you buy these? if so, can you tell me the model number or something?.. I am kinda depressed, it was a good buy until they arrived and now I can't use them.

    3. Did you buy the Decora or the glass ones?

    4. to finalize this in case someone else ever reads this, I bought the EU version, so that is why they don't fit. The description never said EU anywhere and I assumed they would fit here in US but they did not.

  2. Very cool! I picked up a few of the bulbs since my skills are not that great to disassemble and flash them like unlike other things. Sounds like the brightness is decent.

  3. Ordered a 4-pack. Looking forward to the your video. I don't mind flashing but wire, but bulbs can be a challenge. Easier this way and support thier open-source approach. Win-win in my mind.

  4. Are they anything to do with ATHOM as in homey - athom.com?
If they are.. thats odd that they are promoting local only since they went cloud only last year on the Homey device..

but then this looks like a rip off their name

  5. Caution about upgrading to the latest Tasmota, at least with the bulbs.

I got mine and they are very decent and bright, although they say 600lm they compare or are better than a couple of 810lm I have (or I have crappy bulbs - haha).

I followed the steps above to attempt to get it to the "full" Tasmota and appear to have bricked one. All it does is flash on and off despite setting it to generic (19) before uploading the tasmota.bin.gz.

Not willing to try the other, but may open this one up for a wire flash to try and recover it.

    1. Edit, I was able to fast-power-cycle recover it!

It is on the latest Tasmota too. I'm a little wary of doing the second one still, but my confidence is a bit higher now.

    2. Awesome job! Yes I too was impressed by the little bulb. They were supposed to fix that 1meg flash issue. Glad to hear the power recovery works! Thanks for sharing!

  6. "Athom" as a company name is already trademarked by Athom B.V. who is famous for making their "Homey" home automation hub.

Very cliche of a Chinese company simply copying the name of an existing company already famous in the home automation market.

They should expect a cease and desist letter ordering them to stop using the "Athom" as soon as Athom B.V. finds out.

  8. I hate be the dumb one here but can anyone point me to an example lights.yaml for getting the colors to work for this bulb. I've only ever used the Wyze bulbs in HA.

  9. Just to let everyone know my experience with this company is very bad and I would not recommend them at all. They were very bad in negotiating a replacement when they had poor descriptions of items I bought. I would rather just put Tasmota on myself than deal with them.

    3. You said, " I would rather just put Tasmota on myself than deal with them." So I thought you might know how to put Tasmota on some other bulb. Maybe something that's easier to deal with.

    4. I know the 60watt Lohas bulbs are still doable via Tuya-convert.

    5. @digiblueDIY Can you show how to get the bulb setup in HomeAssistant ?

  10. I know this is an old post now, but I just got 2 of Athom's new 15W RGB bulbs. They are really bright, obviously more so the whites than the colors, but wow. The diffuser is also much bigger than a standard bulb which I think helps with the light brightness, so beware. It is probably close to a G40 you'd have in a bathroom fixture. But, it does still fit in our standard table lamps that use hasps. No more special tricks to flash their stuff to stock Tasmota either, just click Firmware Upgrade and you'll get the latest right from the repository (same with their 7W bulbs which I got 4 of). They are probably worth a mention on the next livestream.
